Today at the Garden

Today, 11 garden volunteers enjoyed soup from the Zen Center and we had a garden meeting during a beautifully sunny San Francisco day.
Then we picked weeds, moved some dirt and encouraged the lady bugs to continue to eat the bugs that were eating some of the plants. The photo above is of Ilyse collecting some buds from the chamomile to dry for some tea.
Above is a picture of a velvet queen that we got as a start from the Free Farm.

Today at the Garden

Today at the garden we did some planting.
We had a special workshop on taking care of fruit trees. We appreciated the structure that was made for the beans to grow on that was created on Monday.
We added some more vertical containers to our fence.
And we admired the signs to designate which beds need watering in the garden.
I hope you will join us on Monday!

watching Our Garden Grow

The hanging plant above was transplanted from an single room occupancy (SRO) hotel room by one of its residents who also weaved the plant hanger from twine. This garden volunteer dreams of getting house plants that respond well to growing in SRO's to help formerly homeless individuals feel more at home in their new housing. He would also like to teach a class to teach others how to make their own plant hangers.

It should be noted that the plant above, a trandescantia pallida, is commonly known by a racist name. We have been taking the opportunity to educate individuals about racism as we talk about this plant and have encouraged people to call the plant the Purple Heart or Purple Queen (it's less commonly used names) rather than the "wandering Jew."
Our succulant pockets have been flurishing since we planted them. The small pink flower that is currently blooming is called Camus.
Our oats and peas cover crop started growing right away. Here is what they looked like a week after scattering seeds.
We've got a large pumpkin growing in the garden that looks like it will be ready just in time for halloween. Today we harvested all these parsnips.
For our lunch today we shared harvested veggies, including the carrots and kohlrabi seen above.

More Vertical Gardening on the Fence

Today at the garden we planted more vertical fence gardens. Continuing in our theme of using free items that anyone could use from around their house and actual items that have been used to feed the homeless and hungry, we used large tomato and coffee cans from a dinner that feed 200 homeless individuals. Here's how we did it. First, we drilled holes in the can: some in the bottom for drainage and six in the side to hang the can on the fence with roofing wire.
Next, we painted the cans fun colors and let them dry. Then we attached the cans to the fence with the wire, filled the cans with potting soil, planted produce seedlings in them and watered them. Finally, we painted the names of the plants on the outside of the cans.
We also added some baskets we bought at the local gardening store and planted them with produce plants too. We planted the produce so close together so that we could have cut-and-come-again produce. This means that we'll trim it with scissors (cutting it like a lawn) and harvest it more than once.
